Primary Purpose:

 

Direct and manage the district’s transportation and vehicle maintenance program.  Assist in the direction of the district’s maintenance, custodial operations, and food service operations.  Maintain physical school plant in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use may be at all times.  Provide students with a physical learning environment that is safe, clean, attractive, and functional.  Oversee maintenance of all district-owned vehicles and ensure safe and efficient operation of transportation department.    

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification: 

High School Diploma

College hours and special training and experience in maintenance and transportation in a school

   district

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of basic principles of construction, school plant maintenance, and custodial operations

Ability to manage budget and personnel

Ability to coordinate district function

Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data

Ability to read blueprints and schematics

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Knowledge of energy management and vehicle repair and maintenance

Ability to direct and manage operations of a large fleet of vehicles

 

Experience:

Three years of supervisory experience in maintenance and transportation operations

Five years of experience in maintaining a large plant or building and supervisory experience in

   Transportation of a school fleet preffered

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Building Maintenance and Repair:

Assist the Maintenance Director in:

 

  1. Direct and manage custodial, maintenance/repair, security and warehouse operations of district.

 

  1. Receive and process work orders for repair/maintenance of buildings and grounds.

 

  1. Develop and maintain written procedures for maintenance, repair, operations and security of district.

 

  1. Prepare plans and specifications for contracted repair work and site improvement for submission to purchasing department for bids.

 

  1. Notify Campus Administrators of any custodial, maintenance, repair or security concerns regarding their campus buildings.

 

  1. Administer assistance to Campus Administrators concerning campus and buildings.

 

Routes and Schedule:

 

  1. Prepare and update bus routes and schedules and plan to meet future needs.

 

  1. Coordinate transportation for extracurricular activities and special programs.

 

  1. Respond to after-hours emergency calls.

 

  1. Notify bus drivers, schools, and public of changes in bus routes.

 

  1. Implement federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and local board policy.

 

  1. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents for maintenance and transportation area.

 

  1. Prepare data necessary to process maintenance and transportation payroll.

 

  1. Administer transportation budgets and ensure programs are managed prudently and cost-             effective.

 

  1. Plan and direct inventory and stock control program for equipment and supplies for transportation.

 

  1. Approve and forward invoices and purchase orders for transportation to accounting department.

 

  1. Prepare, review, and revise job descriptions in transportation department.

 

  1. Recruit, train, supervise transportation personnel and make sound recommendations about personnel placement, transfer, retention, and dismissal.

 

  1. Assign bus drivers to routes and find substitutes as needed.

 

  1. Prepare, process, and maintain required documents verifying safety certification and alcohol and drug testing of drivers.

 

 

 

 

 

Budget and Inventory

Assist the Maintenance Director in:

 

 

  1. Administer maintenance budgets and ensure programs are managed prudently and cost-effective.

 

  1. Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.

 

  1. Plan and direct inventory and stock control program for equipment and supplies for maintenance.

 

  1. Initiate purchase orders and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.

 

  1. Replace and maintain a current inventory of supplies and parts to avoid delay when reordering.

 

  1. Approve and forward invoices and purchase orders for maintenance to accounting department.

 

  1. Recommend disposal of obsolete equipment and purchase replacement equipment when necessary.

 

Personnel Management:

Assist the Maintenance Director in:

 

  1. Assign and oversee work (to completion) of maintenance personnel.

 

  1. Prepare, review, and revise job descriptions in maintenance department.

 

  1. Evaluate job performance of employees.

 

  1. Recruit, train, supervise maintenance personnel and make sound recommendations about personnel placement, transfer, retention, and dismissal.

 

Student Management:

 

  1. Review student behavior reports and conference with Campus Administrators so that the Campus Administrator can establish any disciplinary action.

 

  1. Insure that the bus drivers have documented disciplinary forms describing student-riding privileges as set by Campus Administrator. All disciplinary action established by Campus Administrator is to be carried out by the bus driver.

 

Safety:

 

 

  1. Maintain safety standards in conformance with federal, state, and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventive safety.

 

  1. Ensure that equipment is maintained in operating condition.

 

  1. Advise administration about inclement weather conditions that may result in the closing of schools or road hazards.

 

  1. Help with gathering information in investigations of bus accidents and student safety violations.

 

  1. Help organize and conduct training programs to promote a safe work environment.

 

  1. Ensure transportation equipment is in excellent operating conditions.

 

  1. Perform disaster duty as needed.

 

Other:

 

  1. Attend and make presentations at board meetings as needed.

 

  1. Maintain good rapport with parents and community.

 

  1. Attend professional growth activities to keep abreast of innovative techniques in maintenance and transportation operations.

 

  1. Respond to after-hour emergencies as needed.

 

  1. Maintain confidentiality of all information.
