Primary Purpose:

 

Direct and manage the overall program of extracurricular and intramural athletics for the district.  To teach students teamwork, rules of fair play, value of fitness and knowledge and skills of assigned sport to help in developing students with healthy minds and bodies to become responsible members of society.  Work to provide each student with opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity and ensure compliance with all state, UIL, and local requirements.    

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification: 

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree from accredited college or university

Valid Texas Teaching Certificate with physical education endorsement

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing athletics

General knowledge of overall operations of an athletic program which includes all sports and

   coaching techniques related to them

Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data

Ability to manage budget and personnel and coordinate district function

Demonstrated administrative and coaching abilities as evidenced by university record or

   previous coaching record

Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

 

Experience:

Five years experience as an assistant or head football coach or a combination of five years coaching and playing experience

 

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

General:

Administer the total organization of the district athletic and physical education programs.

 

Provide guidance and leadership to the coaching staff and athletes.

 

Support the entire district educational program and set goals consistent with campus goals. 

 

Provide leadership to develop and administer the department budget according to district guidelines.

 

Program:

 

Keep informed of and comply with State, district, and school policies for public school athletic programs. 

 

Plan and conduct a regular program of practice in season.

 

Keep informed and enforce compliance with all UIL rules.

 

Schedule or direct staff to schedule games and contests in all sports, and operation of each sport’s physical facilities. 

 

Keep all necessary reports, attendance forms, authorizations, and insurance records as needed. 

 

Formulate goals and objectives for the district’s athletic program.

 

Make reports to the administration as requested.

 

Make program change recommendation as necessary.

 

Prepare and administer the athletic budget according to district guidelines and input from departmental staff.

 

Direct the coaching staff to submit the necessary forms for requesting transportation, supplies, and equipment.

 

Students:

 

Direct a program that includes all safety precautions to protect student athletes.

 

Establish and maintain open lines of communication with student athletes and parents.

 

Establish control in the classroom and athletic areas, and administer discipline and punishment in accordance with board policies and administrative regulations.

 

Encourage by example, and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.

 

Administer a program, which causes students to develop the skill and ability to excel in the assigned sport. 

 

Travel with the student athletes for assigned sports and supervise the team during athletic competition. 

 

Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students’ athletic ability initially and on a regular basis.

 

Establish and carry out a program to condition athletes for competition. 

 

Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media, consistent with the needs and capabilities of the student athlete group and sport involved. 

 

Provide leadership to the staff to consider student feelings, value systems, interests, and concerns on an individual basis.

 

Assist the coaching staff in providing opportunities for the athlete to develop self-evaluation skills to help him/her understand himself/herself and assess individual strengths and limitations.

 

Structure a program, which assists the athlete in analyzing his/her conduct and accepting responsibility for actions. 

 

Administer a program for student athletic insurance.

 

Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extra-curricular participation.

 

Assure compliance with the requirements of Title IX.

 

Outline grading policies for PE and athletics.

 

Prepare a student athletic handbook and plan for annual updates.

 

Educate student athletes and parents about college scholarships and assist athletes with the scholarships.

 

Personnel:

 

Cooperate with other members of the school staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods for the overall educational development of student athletes. 

 

Attend and work with faculty in scheduled faculty meetings.

 

Supervise and evaluate personnel assigned to him. 

 

Assist the coaching staff in determining staff development programs and activities to enhance the capabilities of each coach. 

 

Cooperate with the personnel department in determining staff needs and selecting personnel. 

 

Provide leadership to the staff by setting an example, teaching self-evaluation in assessing personal strengths and limitations. 

 

Involve the staff in planning, decision-making, and implementation of the entire program. 

 

Plan with the principal to implement all phases of the athletic program.

 

Demonstrate a professional attitude and accept his/her part in the entire educational program. 

 

Equipment and Supplies:

 

Assist the staff in determining supply, proper equipment and uniform needs for each sport. 

 

Direct the staff in the proper care and maintenance of all athletic facilities, equipment, and supplies. 

 

Consider safety as a major factor in equipment and supply selection.

 

Administer and monitor the upkeep of all game and practice fields.

 

Maintain an up-to-date record and inventory of all athletic and physical education equipment and supplies. 

 

Create a positive school image by involving community members and agencies in a supportive role. 

 

Contribute support to the community through active participation in civic affairs. 

 

Communicate and interpret Board policies, administrative procedures, and UIL regulations to the community. 

 

Communicate athletic department news and successes to parents, faculty, school board, and the community. 

 

Other:

 

Set a leadership example and create a positive image as Athletic Director to staff, students, and community patrons.

 

Perform such other tasks as assigned by the Superintendent or high school principal.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

Supervise and evaluate the performance of coaches and support staff.
